EU-FLOOD-GIS Metadata Catalogue

Two major data collection systems – EU-FLOOD-GIS and ETN-R - support the European Commission in the execution of the European Flood Alert System (EFAS) and related research projects.

The EU-FLOOD-GIS is a data integration system for hydrological and meteorological data relevant for floods and contains data such as real-time and historic observations, flood extent vectors, cross sections, rating curves, and other information. One part of EU-FLOOD-GIS is a Metadata Catalogue with information from data providers across Europe on the data they hold.
This catalogue provides a first overview on which data are available and who is the contact institution. The data providers have access to check these data and keep them up to date.

The catalogue is an important first step for data collection on European scale, in order to know what data can be obtained, under which conditions and who to contact. The catalogue has been established in 2006 keeping in mind that a directive for INSPIRE  was on its way. Now, in 2009, the EU-FLOOD-GIS system was finalised and transferred to the JRC, the metadata calalogue is put online for the data providers to check and update their data. If the data providers agree, the catalogue can be put online for the general public for browsing the content.

The EU-FLOOD-GIS was developed by Atkins  and financed by the European Parliament  and DG ENV. The ETN-R  project, executed by the Global Runoff Data Centre (GRDC) and financed by DG ENTR  and DG ENV , collects real-time river data such as discharge and water levels for trans-national European rivers. The data are collected and processed by the GRDC and transferred to the JRC where they are incorporated in the EU-FLOOD-GIS as well as the metadata catalogue.
